‘Young, Gay and Murdered’

As kids who are gay begin coming out at earlier ages, many questions about how to handle it have come up recently. A big reason for this discussion is because Larry King, 15, was shot by a classmate on Feb. 12. Larry was openly gay, flamboyant and had apparently asked his “crush,” Brandon McInerney, to be his Valentine. Brandon was the one who shot Larry, who died in the hospital the following day.

Should the school have prevented Larry from wearing makeup and high heels in order to protect him and prevent other students from teasing him? Could they even legally do that? Should Larry be allowed to express himself if it distracted other students and was a disruption in the classroom?

All of these issues and more are talked about in great detail in this Newsweek article. Very sad, moving and thought-provoking.
